How to lose points on the SAT Essay

One of the easiest ways to bring down your SAT writing score is to write the WRONG kind of paragraph. Here’s an example from the topic “Does one need
discipline in order to be successful?

Helen Keller is a great example for self-discipline. Although she had a lot of help from her teacher Annie Sullivan, Helen overcame her disability to hear and see and became to be a bright and inspiring woman. It was not easy for Helen to learn, but discipline form Annie was just enough to do the trick.

What’s wrong with this paragraph?

1. It does not restate the thesis in the first sentence. Saying “Helen Keller is a great example of self-discipline” does not speak to the topic which asks “Does one need self-discipline in order to succeed?”

2. Although this paragraph gives good background information, it does NOT give us the logic that proves whether or not we need discipline to succeed.

3. Finally this paragraph does not restate it’s main point at the end. As a result, this essay which had several paragraphs like this scored a 3 out of 12. The lowest score you can get for an on-topic essay is 2. Don’t let this happen to you.
