Do It Yourself Projects

The big thing to do these days is to take on every kind of job and diy or do it yourself. This will save you money, but also give you tremendous satisfaction on a job well done. Be careful on what type of projects you take on though. There is nothing more frustrating then getting to a certain point and having to call in a professional just because you did not take a simple how to course or pick up a $50 book on how to do the project properly. Don’t get cheap now and try to find all the answers for free everywhere on the net. Simply take a short course and then do your project. This will save you tons of grief.

Recently I went into a clients house to do some plumbing work for their basement bathroom. My client was building his own shower stall out of tile. He asked me quite a few questions, which I could only answer a few of. I have installed many shower enclosures, but when it comes to framing, drywall and setting tile I am not so good at that. I have seen it done enough times though that I at least pointed in him the right direction.

Another client of mine had decided to do their own main floor bathroom renovation. This client was a general contractor with a lot of skills in all areas of the building trades. I had done many plumbing jobs for different renovations that he had on the go, but this one was in his house and he wanted to tackle that himself. He had one small problem though. After the job was done he found out he had installed the shower faucet upside down. Ouch!! His bathtub looked great, faucets, shower head, spout, and tiles all looked fantastic. Which made it tough for me to have to break the tile on the wall with the faucet in it to get it going the right way. Two hours after I had my part finished and that night he put back the drywall and tile, and grouted the next evening. All in all not a huge deal, but still disappointing, hopefully he does not read this, lol.

A project that I am taking on next week is a diy tiles job. This is a fairly simple job as far as tile setting goes. I am installing tile on the floor in the basement bathroom. I have to lift the toilet, pour down some thin set, which is a self levelling cement. Then start setting tiles. Compared to installing tile in a shower or on a shower floor with a liner this should be easy, at least that is what it looks like in the book. I will know next week, until then good luck with any diy jobs you tackle.
